Scholastic Books

I sent out my first Scholastic book catalog to my students about 2 weeks ago. When I received all the orders I went ahead and put in the orders with Scholastic. I noticed they made some changes and wonderful upgrades. Once I placed my order, I received an email shortly after listing and stating the books I had just ordered. Guess what? I also found out that they will waive the shipping fee for orders less than $20. They also gave me free $10 to spend for every catalog that I ordered from that was over $20. I thought that was a lot. They also tripled my points and I received my order in a much shorter amount of time. I usually had to wait several weeks to get my order. I received my shipment within a week. Talk about some serious changes that were made. If any of you teachers out there completed a survey for Scholastic, thank you! Your advice was taken seriously and made a huge difference in my first order!

Tardies

One thing I’m not quite sure I understand is tardiness. I have two students who are consistantly tardy each and every day they come to school. When I ask them why they are tardy, they simply reply, “My mom has to take my brother to school also.” I had to stop and digest this because my first immediate response is to say, “And where is she taking you? Aren’t you going to school as well?” I can understand being late to school occasionally, cars breakdown, moms and dads get sick, but tardy each day? There is no excuse for it. Parent’s don’t understand that when their child comes in late, not only have they missed the morning curriculum, rituals, and routines, but they are also disrupting the teaching and learning that goes on in our room.

Missing Alphabet Letters

So after laminating my new alphabet letters and cutting them out, I decided to lay them out on the floor in the order I wanted them hung. I get to “MNO” laid them down and reach for “PQR” and find they are missing. Thinking I misplaced them I went on a man hunt with other teachers in search for my missing letters. I didn’t find them! I even had my co-teacher look through the stack thinking some of the letter stuck together. I’m thinking the company may have left out the letters. I’ll be making a pit stop to the teacher supply store some time tomorrow. Although not all things go as planned, I still love my job. I just get set back occasioanlly!

School Supplies

Now that school is coming to a near, I’ve been out purchasing items for my classroom. After getting to the register and hearing my total of $73.68 I nearly collapsed. What did I buy that could cost so much?

I think others tend to forget that teachers purchase many of their own supplies and decorations. Instead of seeing a reduced cost on our classroom materials it seems they have raised the prices. It’s pretty evident that whoever is determining the prices of these items was never a teacher. If they only knew how much of our own money was put toward items in the classroom, than maybe they would rethink the cost of labels, stickers, and workbooks. Either we need a raise or a discount. Who’s in?
